The term ginseng refers to the class within Panax- a name derived from the same root as the word panacea, or “cure-all”, a genus of 11 species of slow growing persistent plants with fleshy roots, in the family Araliaceae. These plants grown in eastern Asia, typically in cooler climates. The two major species are American ginseng (grown in the Midwest of America and exported to China) and Asian ginseng. Asian ginseng has been used for 2,000 years in the Far East, where it’s considered, among other things, the ultimate sexual restorer for men. Ginseng is known to be an adaptogen – adaptogen are substances that help the body to restore itself to health and to work without side effects.
Few benefits of Ginseng are:-
  • Reducing mental stress and anxiety
  • Increasing mental clarity and alertness
  • Stimulating the immune and nervous system
  • Treating diabetes
  • Preventing the growth of certain types of cancer cells
  • Lowering cholesterol levels
  • Improving digestion
  • Reducing fatigue
  • Improving athletic endurance
Studies have shown Ginseng to enhance physical and mental performance. One study done at Wayne State University, found that ginseng supplementation had no effect on aerobic capacity, as measured by oxygen consumption and heart rate.
How to use it?
Today ginseng is available in many forms in the market. From dried root to gum, brandy, tea or candy but the standard dosage is 200 mg daily (2 capsules). As a tonic it will take some time to show results (say around 2 months). Try American ginseng first, as it is considered to be milder then Asian, unless you want to feel stimulated or are a man looking for increases sexual drive.
Word of Caution: both Asian and American ginseng may have estrogenic activity and should be avoided by women with hormonal imbalance or with estrogen-dependent aliments such as uterine fibroids; cervical cancer etc. children should not use ginseng. Higher doses may cause upset stomach, diarrhea or eruptions on skin in some cases.
