The term ginseng refers to the class
within Panax- a name derived from the same root as the word panacea, or
“cure-all”, a genus of 11 species of slow growing persistent plants with fleshy
roots, in the family Araliaceae. These plants grown in eastern Asia, typically in cooler climates. The two major species
are American ginseng (grown in the Midwest of America and exported to China) and
Asian ginseng. Asian ginseng has been used for 2,000 years in the Far East, where it’s considered, among other things, the
ultimate sexual restorer for men. Ginseng is known to be an adaptogen –
adaptogen are substances that help the body to restore itself to health and to
work without side effects.

- Increasing mental clarity and alertness
- Stimulating the immune and nervous system
- Treating diabetes
- Preventing the growth of certain types of cancer cells
- Lowering cholesterol levels

Studies have shown Ginseng to
enhance physical and mental performance. One study done at Wayne State
University, found that
ginseng supplementation had no effect on aerobic capacity, as measured by
oxygen consumption and heart rate.
How to use it?
Today ginseng is available in
many forms in the market. From dried root to gum, brandy, tea or candy but the
standard dosage is 200 mg daily (2 capsules). As a tonic it will take some time
to show results (say around 2 months). Try American ginseng first, as it is
considered to be milder then Asian, unless you want to feel stimulated or are a
man looking for increases sexual drive.
Word of Caution: both Asian and
American ginseng may have estrogenic activity and should be avoided by women
with hormonal imbalance or with estrogen-dependent aliments such as uterine
fibroids; cervical cancer etc. children should not use ginseng. Higher doses may
cause upset stomach, diarrhea or eruptions on skin in some cases.
